In previous posts, I underscored the importance of reliability and readability in the work of Bible translation. In other words, a good translation of the Bible will "... reliably replicate the meaning of the text without sacrificing its readability" (Comfort, Essential Guide to Bible Versions, 104). On this score, I've found that the NLT succeeds wonderfully.
With the "two Rs" as non-negotiables, allow me now to share a little more on "Why, lately, I've been preaching from the NLT." It has to do with my heart and how God is working in my life. Here's an example from just last night:
Meeting with a small group of men, the conversation turned to the importance and legitimacy of publicly recognizing hard-working volunteers in the church. I immediately thought of something Paul said about Epaphroditus, a hard-working brother well-known to the Philippians. So I grabbed my Compact Edition NLT, found Philippians 2:25, and began reading aloud. (To get the gist of what I'm describing, you might try reading these words aloud for yourself):
"Meanwhile, I thought I should send Epaphroditus back to you. He is a true brother, co-worker, and fellow soldier. And he was your messenger to help me in my need. I am sending him because he has been longing to see you, and he was very distressed that you heard he was ill. And he certainly was ill; in fact, he almost died. But God had mercy on him -- and also on me, so that I would not have one sorrow after another.
So I am all the more anxious to send him back to you, for I know you will be glad to see him, and then I will not be so worried about you. Welcome him with Christian love and with great joy, and give him the honor that people like him deserve. For he risked his life for the work of Christ, and he was at the point of death while doing for me what you couldn't do from far away."
Now this may sound "weird" to some but, as I was reading, my heart was singing -- at the beauty, simplicity, and profundity of God's word. I genuinely felt joy. Because I understood what I read! Because I knew my brothers did too! And because we knew it was TRUTH!
When he's standing on the solid ground of a reliable and readable Bible, a man with a singing heart is a happy man -- let me tell you! And that's more of "Why, lately, I've been preaching from the NLT."
